The Music Therapy Program
Marvin Picollo School is a suburban school for students with special needs in the Washoe County School District. The school has approximately 100 students from age 3-21 who are provided with Music Therapy or Music Enrichment on a weekly basis. The Music Therapy Program is mainly concerned with life skills, and functional and behavioral curriculum, and pre academics
Housing , educational, cultural and recreation facilities are excellent in the area
Internship Experience
Interns will work with age 3 – 21 students with a variety of special needs including but not limited to, Down’s Syndrome, Cebrial Palsy, Autism, Rett Syndrome, Cornelia De Lang, Dandy Walker, behavior issues, Medically Fragile,
Students are grouped by pre school age 3-5, elementary, age 6-11, Jr. H. 12-13, H.School, 14-16, Transition, age 17-21. The intern will work with normal peers in an integrated program for elem age, and a community based program for 17-21. The intern will also have the opportunity to work with performing groups in guitar, choirchimes, sing & sign, and a band.. There will also be an opportunity to work with students with Sound Beam, Super Switch, Band in a Box, and Siebelius for example. These tools can help with student and interns knowledge and experience. Intern will have the opportunity to work with groups and individual students as well as performing groups. The intern will experience taking students in the community to access music performances as a performer and as a listener.
Professional Staff
The staff at the school includes Special Education Teachers, Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapist, Adaptive PE Teacher, Adaptive aquatics Teacher, Equine Horse Program Staff, Nursing Staff, RN and LPN’s, Secretary, Principal, other Music Teachers,
Training
There are opportunities to take a variety of music classes through the local University and Community college and Orff-Schulwerk classes through the local Orff-Schulwerk Chapter. The Music Department holds classes etc. through out the year. The School District hold in service classes on a variety of topic. The student will have the opportunity to take CPT (Crisis Prevention Intervention) a model used at the school and through the district. The students will be required to take CPR their first month. which is district provided for a small fee.
Essentials:
Starting Months: first week in August unless approval of Director
Modified Traditional School Track, Start the second week in Aug. I week off the end of October, Thanksgiving break, Christmas holiday 3 weeks, two weeks spring break the end of March. School is finished the middle of June Around June 12
